trying to release the mind into meaningful architectural musings… there is something in my head, but Im struggling to grasp and visualise this….I have a yearning to do a large drawing… why am I holding myself back.

A start has turned into a fervor of work and anxiety about Architecture, the diploma is a challenge greater than the degree. Yesterday a tutor from the last year of my degree asked if I had any images of my portfolio that I showed to get me onto the degree course, the truth was I got onto the course because I was older than 21, and not because of my first ever attempt at an Architectural model.

I love that model, it reminds me of my naive ambition, I keep it on my desk, still proud of the little wire wool tree. The model is well proportioned and would make a good size house if measured at 1:100. I purposefully made it small, so it was easier to carry to London on the train.

diploma has begun, and under the eyes of the renowned Neil Spiller and Phil Watson, I tentatively began, not appeased with a sprayed white model and some drawings which skirted around my given site, I at pain produced this site plan, I have forced my self to think at some depth about my own agenda for the site - I’m thinking aggregates and Herbert Duprats Caddis Fly tubes.

The Land Observatory was nominated for the Bronze Medal award at the RIBA, here I show 7 of the 15 sheets that I submitted. I am not confident of my chances of winning the medal, but, I had to try. These sheets are a bit more polished than my usual style, I was tempted to spray them and flick paint over them and leave my smudgy finger prints on them, but I thought it would be disregarded by the RIBA…as a result, I dont think there is any soul in any of these sheets.

another sketch from idle hands…rubble becomes a foundation and ground slab for a tent with a pyramid hipped canvas, over time walls go up on either side and the canvas is raised, after more time the walls increase in height, a first floor is added and rafters…

aside from studying and developing my own ideas about visionary architecture, I also work in an architectural practice. In the picture is a sketch which I have been adding to over the last few days when my hands are idle answering the phone or something. It is a detail of a floor junction between ground outside ground inside and the foot of a wall. I show insulation under the ground around the perimeter of the construct, I show the floor based off a simple small concrete ground beam with the infill slab on crushed hardcore, and a deep compacted sand bed. The wall is a simple rendered timber frame. This idea uses significantly less concrete than a standard house floor build up… just trying to push the ideas of convention a little more each time….

The Head of the Land Observatory, the cockpit. Decades after the building goes out of use, the power of the sea takes it’s toll and the building comes apart, leaving the head beached and ravaged, a fragment of the instrument… failed like the experimental island on which it is sited.

I took the model to uni yesterday, i made it through the olympic traffic, my precious cargo stowed with care on the passenger seat. I took time to add the finishing pieces, and construct a simple plinth block. I used the university studio to photograph the piece, and then carefully bubble wrapped it… today it will be shipped to the Venice Bienalle 2012.

My university has asked me to build a model in white card of my final project to be sent to the Venice Bienalle…its coming along…i am making a big effort with it to keep it clean and glue free, i wouldnt normally model in white card its their choice, but… its coming along.

I’m already saddened by the fact that it will not be returned to me….

Incredibly my final year project has been nominated for the RIBA Presidents Bronze Medal, I am now frantically reworking my sheets into the new format for submission. I had completely forgotten about my project, and now revisiting it, The Outer Trial Bank has the feeling of a relic, an abandoned scientific instrument, failed and isolated and left in this crater in the sea.

I fixed my work to the stand for the end of year exhibition, I was given quite a bit of space, which I filled with heavy paper and ink. This marked the end for me with the project, putting it on display is my disengagement with it, although I feel that I never quite finished with the Outer Trial Bank, and this Land Observatory needs more of my time.

thats it….

the final hand in of my Architecture degree. The final project was about isolation and an island research outpost called the Land Observatory, it only seemed fitting to construct a “crate” to present my work in, as if it were a delivery to the island itself.

I am totally engaged with this project now, and I dont really know how to stop working with it….

some sheets from my final crit, my building on the face of it is about observation and acts as an outpost like Scotts Cabin, but underneath that it is a dark place of isolation, where everyday activities are intensified into events.

The final project of my degree has grown. It lumbers in a circle around the island on which it is held, giving shelter to researchers and scientists and observers of coastal erosion, the building is a land observatory, it is like Scotts Cabin, a shelter in a difficult environment, sitting in the island in the seascape, it moves with the coming and going tide on which it maneuvers casting its telescopes on the changing mainland.
